NFEAIE Native Language Immersion Grant Program Applicant FAQ

The National Fund for Excellence in American Indian Education (The Fund) grant program is dedicated to improving academic outcomes, including through expanding access to Native Language instruction for students enrolled in BIE schools. To advance this mission, in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), the Fund is excited to announce the availability of $6,500,000 in grant funding for BIE-funded schools. These grants are aimed at enhancing existing language immersion programs or establishing new initiatives that broaden access to Native language instruction and improve academic outcomes. The Fund will award between six to twelve grants to support the expansion of language immersion instruction.

1. What is the primary objective of the grant program?

The grant program is fundamentally designed to support initiatives that increase access to Native language instruction through comprehensive educational strategies. 

2. What are allowable activities under the grant?

The grants seek to provide funding for projects that focus on increasing Native language through activities such as:

  • Developing materials to support Native language instruction;
  • Recruiting and training educators for Native language instruction;
  • Designing and implementing a Mentor Apprentice program for educators to learn their language; and/or
  • Creating opportunities for students at participating BIE schools to engage in summer learning and/or after-school programs that provide them with access to language, including through building partnerships with AmeriCorps and Native organizations.

3. Who can apply for grants?

Any BIE funded school is eligible to apply for grants.

4. What is the term of the grant?

The term of the grant will be the date of award through December 14, 2026.

5. What categories of projects are eligible for funding under this grant?

The grant funds are intended for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Development of instructional materials.  This may involve the creation of guides, digital resources, or multimedia content that supports Native language instruction.
  • Recruitment and training of educators.  Funding can be allocated for workshops, training sessions, and recruitment initiatives aimed at cultivating a proficient team of educators specialized in Native language instruction.
  • Design and implementation of a mentorship program.  This entails establishing a structured framework whereby experienced language speakers mentor educators to enhance their linguistic proficiency and pedagogical approaches.
  • Creation of summer learning and after-school programs.  Projects that offer students opportunities to engage with language and academic support, particularly through partnerships with organizations such as AmeriCorps and other Native organizations are eligible for funding.

6. What is the application process for the grant?

To apply for the grant, applicants are required to follow these procedural steps:

  • Review the guidelines: It is essential to thoroughly understand the program’s objectives and eligibility criteria.
  • Prepare the proposal: Develop a detailed proposal that clearly outlines the project's goals, planned activities, budgetary requirements, and anticipated outcomes.
  • Submit the application: All applications must be submitted via email by April 8th  (more information below).

7. When is the application deadline?

The closing date and time for the receipt of proposal submissions is Tuesday, April 8th, 2025 at 11:59 P.M. Eastern Standard Time in order to be considered for funding.  Proposals received after this time and date stamp will not be considered by the Awarding Official. Applicants are encouraged to regularly check for updates to ensure timely submission of their proposals.

Applicants will be notified of grant awards by April 29, 2025.

Applications must be submitted to info@nfeaie.org with the required information, project narrative, and budget narrative attached.

8. Is there a funding cap for individual projects?

Funding amounts may vary depending on the project's scope and the availability of financial resources within the program.  Applicants should consult the grant guidelines for specific information regarding funding limits and the requirements associated with their proposed projects.

10. Can grant funds be allocated to administrative costs?

Yes, a portion of the grant funds may be designated for administrative expenses, provided that such costs are justified and directly contribute to the successful implementation of the funded project.  Applicants should clearly articulate how these administrative expenses will support the achievement of project objectives.

11. What are the reporting obligations for funded projects?

Recipients of the grant will be required to submit periodic progress reports, detailing the project's advancements, encountered challenges, and financial expenditures. Specific reporting requirements will be communicated upon approval of the grant.
